How to pack for a dawn safari (and actually enjoy it)
A good safari starts the night before. Lay out warm layers you can peel off as the sun climbs, and keep a flask of tea or coffee within reach — cold seats and early air make even short waits feel longer.
What to wear (and what to leave)
Dress in quiet colours and soft fabrics. Bright logos and rustling jackets distract you and the wildlife. Soft closed shoes help on uneven tracks; a light scarf or beanie earns its place before sunrise.
Watch first, shoot second
Bring binoculars, not just a long lens. Many of the best sightings are moments you simply watch — a herd shifting in mist, a bird landing nearby — and optics let you stay present without crowding the frame.
Keep expectations light. The grassland gives up its secrets slowly. Some mornings are quiet; that stillness is part of the experience, not a failure of the itinerary.
Above all, be patient with the day and with yourself. Dawn safaris reward people who show up ready for cold air, soft light, and the long wait for something wild to appear.
